MGM Confident Osaka IR Will Be Successful

Ed Bowers, MGM Resorts’ Global Development President, predicts success for the operator’s integrated resort, which is expected to open in 2029 in Osaka, Japan. Strict Japanese rules, according to which the casino hall can occupy no more than 3% of the IR’s territory, presumably will not interfere with its success.

While speaking at G2E Asia 2022, Bowers noted Japan’s ambition to use the Singapore experience and take it to the next level. He also said that IRs are part of the tourism ecosystem for Japan, not their own attractions. Along with the development of integrated resorts like in Singapore, operators should actively encourage foreign tourists to visit attractions in other parts of Japan.

Bowers noted that the country’s government is also concerned about the gambling problem, which affects the implementation of the most stringent and detailed rules in the industry. This is the reason why facilities have to be much more detailed than in other countries. Thus, a casino cannot occupy more than 3% of the area of a single continuous space.

Bowers believes the strict rules won’t stop MGM from getting the expected gross gaming revenue.

Besides, the political and gaming landscape in Asia may shift once again until 2029.

We would like to remind you that two casinos in the state of New York are looking for new employees.
